I find that there is something of a yin-yang relationship between book projects and magazine work, which suits both my career and my personality (I dread being bored). Magazine features allow me to explore—both literally and figuratively—new territory, new personalities, new experiences—and share the adventure with readers in a relatively quick timeframe. It's faster-paced and offers me a chance to write about a great range of subjects for different publications. Writing for magazines also allows me to extend my work beyond the Northwest region, in which the bulk of my cookbook work is rooted.
I recently wrapped up a 6-year stint as food editor at Seattle magazine, a position I particularly enjoyed for the excuse to delve into the world of dining in my hometown and share perspectives and experiences with readers. I'm still contributing to Seattle Magazine, including a recent feature on Washington state's apple industry. And I'm now contributing to Cooking Light magazine, with a recent piece on Seattle and a number of articles in the works for 2006.
Travel writing is another highlight of my career. Among publications I've written for are Alaska Airlines Magazine (Wild Salmon in May, an upcoming feature on Mario Batali in November), Sunset (numerous contributions), Time Canada (a profile of Sooke Harbour House owner Sinclair Philip), Underground Wine Journal (a large feature on Tequila, Mexico, and its namesake amber spirit), and Spa Magazine (see below).
For seven years, I was editor of Simply Seafood magazine, a national consumer magazine devoted to fish and shellfish. I traveled across North America in pursuit of seafood stories, from Veracruz, Mexico to Kodiak Island, Alaska to Boston, Massachusetts. I had the great honor of interviewing Julia Child in her Cambridge home (with a cooler of crisp, briny Olympia oysters under one arm) for a profile of her love of seafood. Other highlights include a feature on Le Bernardin in New York City, exploring the renaissance of the oyster bar, and unearthing amazing seafood in the Colorado Rockies. The magazine is no longer in print.
In 1996, the publishers of Simply Seafood launched Spa Magazine and I became food editor of that publication as well. Articles I wrote for Spa include a feature on the luxurious spa Les Prés d'Eugénie in Eugénie-les-Bains, France, and the ground-breaking light cuisine of Michel Guérard. I was able to indulge in a favorite pastime, tennis, in researching an article about The Colony, the celebrated tennis resort on Longboat Key in Florida. And I chronicled the spa cuisine traditions of the venerable Four Seasons restaurant in Manhattan.
